ALLIGATOR GET-TOGETHER

ALLIGATOR GET-TOGETHER
(Wilde)

In the home swamp once a year
My relatives all gather here
For an Alligator Family Reunion
For seven nights and seven days
We quit our solitary ways
To bellow, roar, dance, sing and play

We’ll thrash our tails
We’ll roar and wail
It’s quite a sight
When alligators get together

There’s Uncle Bill and Cousin Dan
The whole extended gator clan
Six hundred golden shining gator eyes
Some will travel miles and miles
To share some laughter for awhile
Seventy teeth to every happy smile

It never fails
Joy will prevail
We’ll share some tales
When the alligators get together

When I was a young gator my grandfather used to tell me what things were like when he was my age
Back then we were considered an endangered species – on the brink of extinction
People were tearing up our swamp to build strip malls and flimsy houses
And they were making belts and handbags out of our skin
Mama needs a new pair of shoes? Oh let’s just go grab a gator
But then some folks started looking out for us – actually protecting us
You see we’ve been around for 150 million years
We saw the dinosaurs come and go – and that was 60 million years ago
I tell you what – you stay out of our swamp and we’ll stay out of your backyard
We’re not going anywhere – we’ll see you later
